To make a calendar template, I used this site: www.timeanddate.com/calendar
Under the "More Options" tab, I used the "Basic, Classic Customization" table and then copied and pasted the calendar generated into Microsoft Word. After that, I changed elements further until I had the format I wanted to use.
Here are a few calendars if you would like to download any to use a template yourself:
Calendar as copied/pasted from timeanddate.com (July 2018-June 2019): Download (WORD doc)
Calendar fully customized for our home school (July 2018-June 2019 with terms/breaks highlighted): Download (WORD Doc)
Our 2018-2019 school calendar with no highlighting: Download (WORD doc)
To highlight, I used the fill tool (that looks like a little bucket) in Word to highlight/choose colors. Where it says "Term 1, Term 2, etc." that is an inserted table that I made so I could highlight as in the calendar. It is basically highlighting a whole table cell (or cells/rows) instead of just the words.

I hope this helps anyone with questions or anyone who would like to download and modify one of these for their own school year calendar.
